Matterport

Since 2020, Handbuilt has helped cities, businesses, real estate developers, artists, and educators market and tell stories about architectural space using a Matterport camera. The Matterport camera and software platform combine an ingenious mix of hardware and software to create beautiful, immersive, 3D models of spaces using digital imaging and infrared rangefinding. The platform is capable of producing accurate floor plans, virtual tours, and other interactive elements for users. Matterport is easily paired with videography to create a variety of marketing collateral and other interactive media for a range of applications.

Inside the restored space at Ford Motor Company’s Michigan Central in Detroit (May 2024).

From Dubuque to Detroit, we’ve produced interactive tours for everything ranging from the adaptive reuse of a historic 19th century church to a set of historic park pavilion buildings to Ford’s billion-dollar project to restore the former Michigan Central Station.

Use Case & Applications

Use cases and applications include:

Cadastral Projection

As COVID forced us to rethink our ability to interact in physical spaces, Matterport provided us with a valuable opportunity to consider the potential of digital interaction far more substantive than that afforded by social media, e-mail, or text messaging.  In 2020 and 2021, we worked with small business owners across the Midwest to develop virtual tours of their spaces during times when customers were sometimes unable to visit in-person, ranging from RAYGUN in Des Moines to  Yum Village in Detroit. This was a valuable exercise in understanding the important role of physical space in the built environment, but also the role of that space in the economy, as business owners were glad to have an additional tool to connect with their customers. With a uniquely Midwestern focus, and governed by the idae of experiencing spaces without actually physically being in them, we called this “cadastral projection,” a reference to, uh, this thing.

In Minnesota in the aftermath of the 2020 protests and riots, we worked to highlight Black spaces in North Minneapolis and elsewhere in the Twin Cities, including Afro Deli in St. Paul, Sammy’s Avenue Eatery in Minneapolis, and more, and also created a comprehensive tour of Juxtaposition Arts‘ former space (in 2020) as well as its gorgeous new building following an impressive capital campaign (in 2024).

The erstwhile coffee shop and coworking space Bea’s Detroit is featured below as our first-ever job. The space has since closed, but it’s preserved here as a record of what once was and to show what could be again:
