Juxtaposition Arts

On my September 2020 trip, I did Matterport imaging for Juxtaposition Arts. JXTA (“Juxta”), as she is known in shorthand, is a nonprofit community arts organization focused on youth education and empowerment. The organization is celebrating 25 years in North Minneapolis. I started at their offices on North Emerson Avenue and then moved to their space on West Broadway, which currently hosts a pottery studio. The upstairs of that building hosts a private art studio co-op and offices. JXTA Communications Manager and First Avenue alumna Gabby Coll generously took the time to show me around, and Lab Lead, architect Niko Kubota, let me sit in on their Environmental Design Lab session and talk to the students about what I was working on.

I also stopped at Sammy’s Avenue Deli afterward for a delicious turkey melt and they graciously allowed me to image their space as well. Thus have we several related spaces, all connected– or adjacent- to Juxtaposition. Juxtaposed, one might say. The organization is currently two years into a four-year, $14 million capital campaign to fund the construction of a new headquarters, and to renovate and reimagine all the spaces they own around the intersection of West Broadway and North Emerson Avenues. The Emerson Avenue building hosts a tiny storefront gallery space and offices, built into a somewhat awkwardly, though attractively renovated historic home. The West Broadway studio space is expansive and fairly straightforward– but discontiguous with its upstairs office and studio spaces. The Annex, the building south on Emerson (which they are currently leasing during fundraising and construction), is a low, one-story building with a beautiful mural painted on the side.
